I paint to imagine a world where tenderness is not fragile but fundamental.

I call this place the Tender World. It is inhabited by figures who are neither portraits nor characters, but companions — beings who quietly witness one another's joys, fears, doubts, and hopes. Among them is Smile, a recurring presence who carries the Korean sentiments of jeong and heung: warmth that lingers between people and the quiet energy that keeps us moving forward.

Although my work begins in painting, it grows from many worlds. My experience with digital media, animation, and virtual reality has shaped the way I think about identity and presence. We all move through life with many selves, and especially online we create avatars that both reveal and protect us. The figures in my work emerge from this understanding, existing somewhere between memory, imagination, and lived experience.

For me, making is a meditative act, a way of transmuting an endless stream of thought into physical matter. What sustains the work is the rhythmic energy of color and the ecstatic shinmyeong that rises in the heat of creation, an elation the Korean tradition knows well. Yet the truest moments come not from striving but from emptiness: creating with a hollowed spirit, breathing the vibrancy of the present into earth and pigment, one stroke at a time.

I hope my paintings become spaces where viewers can slow down, recognize something of themselves, and leave feeling a little more accompanied than when they arrived.

나는 다정함이 연약한 것이 아니라 근본이 되는 세계를 상상하며 그림을 그린다.

나는 이곳을 '다정한 세계(Tender World)'라 부른다. 이 세계의 인물들은 초상도 캐릭터도 아닌 동행자들이다 — 서로의 기쁨과 두려움, 흔들림과 바람을 조용히 지켜봐 주는 존재들. 그중 '스마일'은 한국적 정서인 정(情)과 흥(興)을 품고 거듭 등장하는 존재로, 사람 사이에 오래 머무는 온기와 우리를 계속 나아가게 하는 조용한 에너지를 전한다.

내 작업은 회화에서 시작하지만 여러 세계에서 자라난다. 디지털 미디어와 애니메이션, 가상현실을 다뤄온 경험은 정체성과 존재를 바라보는 방식을 만들었다. 우리는 모두 여러 자아로 살아가고, 특히 온라인에서는 자신을 드러내는 동시에 지켜주는 아바타를 만든다. 화면 속 인물들은 그런 이해에서 태어나, 기억과 상상과 살아낸 경험 사이 어딘가에 존재한다.

나에게 작업은 명상적 행위다. 끝없이 흐르는 생각을 물질로 옮겨 앉히는 일이다. 작업을 지탱하는 것은 색의 리듬감 있는 에너지, 그리고 창작의 열기 속에서 차오르는 신명이다. 가장 진실한 순간은 애쓰는 데서가 아니라 비움에서 온다. 마음을 비운 채, 지금 이 순간의 생기를 흙과 안료에 불어넣으며, 한 획 한 획 나의 세계를 짓는다.

내 그림이 보는 이가 잠시 느려지고, 자신의 일부를 알아보고, 왔을 때보다 조금 덜 외로운 채로 떠날 수 있는 공간이 되기를 바란다.

Herry Kim (b. 1995, South Korea) is an artist whose paintings and ceramic sculptures construct an imagined emotional landscape she calls the Tender World. Working between Seoul and Los Angeles, her practice draws on Korean philosophy, contemporary spirituality, and digital culture to explore companionship, self-worth, and the quiet resilience of tenderness.

She holds a BFA in Painting and Sculpture from Seoul National University and an MFA in Art and Technology from the California Institute of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited in Seoul, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, Barcelona, and Hong Kong, and has received recent recognition from HENI, Metal Magazine, and AATONAU. Her solo exhibition A Tender World was held at TTE Art Gallery, Seoul, in 2026, and a solo exhibition at Artifact Projects, New York, is forthcoming.

김혜리(b. 1995)는 회화와 도자 조각으로 '다정한 세계(Tender World)'라 부르는 상상의 정서적 풍경을 짓는 작가다. 서울과 로스앤젤레스를 오가며 한국적 사유와 동시대적 영성, 디지털 문화를 바탕으로 동행과 자기 가치, 그리고 다정함의 조용한 회복력을 탐구한다.

서울대학교에서 서양화·조소를 복수전공하고 캘리포니아 예술대학(CalArts)에서 아트 앤 테크놀로지 석사를 마쳤다. 서울, 로스앤젤레스, 런던, 베를린, 바르셀로나, 홍콩 등에서 작품을 선보였으며, 최근 HENI, Metal Magazine, AATONAU 등 해외 플랫폼과 매체에 소개되었다. 2026년 서울 떼아트갤러리에서 개인전 «다정한 세계»를 열었고, 뉴욕 Artifact Projects에서의 개인전을 앞두고 있다.
